beyond
paradise

In a five-part series for Australian Geographic, the spotlight turns to some of Australia’s smallest island communities - places where koalas outnumber people and the tides shape daily life.

These islands, home to less than one percent of the population, are undergoing change as more Australians move away from high-cost city living in search of simplicity.

The series asks whether the idea of an “island paradise” truly exists, or whether it is a myth shaped by centuries of literary and cultural depictions.

Through the perspectives of artists, pearl farmers, publishers, and rangers, the stories capture the rhythms of island living, the contradictions of isolation and connection, and the daily routines shaped by the sea
